quite some time ago, i made a topic asking for advice concerning a friend i had that is still a jw.

he's the guy who initially recruited me.

after i left, he still contacted me occassionally, sometimes offering to help me find a job and whatnot.

Dystopia?

we all agree that the jws are a cult, but are they also a dystopian society?

do the two go hand in hand?

i found some characteristics about dystopian societies, which usually appear in fiction.

Graduation is okay?

as you all know, jws avoid celebrating all major holidays because they are "worldly" and "worldly" things displease jehovah.

however, i remember some jws talking about celebrating certain kids' high school graduations.

so it's not okay to celebrate christmas, thanksgiving, easter, birthdays, etc, but it is okay to celebrate someone's graduation?

i never became a witness.

i only studied with them for about two years before i left.

anyway, as many of you know, they start new recruits off with the brochure "what does god require of us?

JWs thoughts on Hell

the jws don't believe hell, as in the place where evil people are tortured for eternity, exists.

they reason that a loving god would not send his own creation to be tormented for eternity.. yet on the flipside, the jws preach that in 1914 (yeah, you all know this arguement.

) there was a big war in heaven, and satan and all his creatures were cast down to earth.

has anyone read this work by edgar allen poe?

i have to teach this to my 8th grade english class next week, and i was wondering what some of you thought of it.

i ask because i'm toying with different methods of pedagogy to approach this assignment.

So if the NWT is the only accurate translation...

then why does the watch tower use quotes from other versions in their printed material?

if the nwt is so flimsy that they have to resort to other versions in order to make a point, then how can they contend that is the one and only accurate translation?

or is using other translations simply a smokescreen to lure unsuspecting people into the organization?

Where do they come up with the money?

it seems that jws have a knack for pulling money out of their asses.

they work low paying jobs so they can spend 70+ hours in field service, yet they seem to survive on such a salary.. i just saw the most unbelievable site today.

as i was driving through town, i noticed that the man who used to conduct my studies was looking around the used car lot, so i dropped in to say hi.

Santa Clause and lying....

one reason the jws don't celebrate christmas, besides the fact it's supposedly an insult to god, is that they purport that it's wrong to "lie" to children by telling them santa claus exists.

i really didn't give the issue much thought until recently.

the jw i used to study with called me and asked how i was doing, and we eventually got on the subject of christmas, and he brought up that it's wrong because parents lie to children by saying santa claus is real.
